USP and Accelerate Punjab Open Talks on Building a Stronger Startup Ecosystem in Southern Punjab

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Rector of the University of Southern Punjab, Multan, and his team members, including Directors ORIC and BIC, met with Accelerate Punjab representatives to explore pathways for entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology-led growth.

In a meeting aimed at connecting higher education with Punjab’s rapidly evolving innovation economy, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Rector of the University of Southern Punjab (USP), and his team met with representatives of Accelerate Punjab, including Mr. Ali Aqa Gardezi and Syed Zulfiqar Asghar, to discuss opportunities for collaboration in entrepreneurship, technology, and startup development.

The meeting brought into focus a growing question for universities across the region: how can campuses become more than places where students earn degrees and instead serve as launchpads for ideas, enterprises, and jobs?

The discussion comes as Accelerate Punjab positions itself as a government-backed incubation initiative that helps startups turn innovative ideas into sustainable businesses. Its model provides founders with resources and an ecosystem for validating ideas, developing products, attracting customers, and preparing for investment.

For USP, the engagement offers an opportunity to strengthen the bridge between academic knowledge and the entrepreneurial economy of Southern Punjab, particularly by providing students and young innovators with mentorship, business development, and pathways to investment.

Accelerate Punjab offers a comprehensive support package for emerging founders, including free office space, legal consultations, monthly stipends, business development guidance, mentorship, and networking and financing opportunities.

From an Idea to an Enterprise

The initiative’s selection process is deliberately structured: startups apply online, undergo screening and shortlisting, pitch their ideas in an elevator round, and ultimately present to industry leaders. A cohort of 20 startups is selected in the final stage. The brochure describes the process as transparent, merit-based, and data-driven, with independent panels involved in evaluation.

That architecture reflects a broader evolution in Pakistan’s startup-support landscape. According to the brochure, the journey began with Plan9 in 2012, followed by PlanX in 2014, the expansion of Regional Plan9 across Punjab in 2019, and the national expansion of incubation in 2020. In 2026, Accelerate Punjab marks the next chapter in that progression, with a stated focus on driving startup growth and innovation across Punjab.

For USP, the conversation with Accelerate Punjab could open new avenues for students and young entrepreneurs to move beyond the classroom and into the marketplace where ideas must meet customer needs, competition, financing constraints, and the demands of scale.

The meeting also underscores the increasingly important role universities can play in regional economic development. When universities provide talent and ideas, and innovation ecosystems provide mentorship, networks, and access to capital, the distance between a student project and a viable enterprise can be considerably shorter.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar emphasized that Accelerate Punjab could offer a particularly valuable opportunity for graduating students and alums of the University of Southern Punjab who aspire to become entrepreneurs and turn their ideas into viable ventures. He encouraged young innovators within the USP community to view the initiative not merely as an incubation platform but as a potential pathway from an idea to a startup and from a startup to a sustainable enterprise. With Accelerate Punjab offering mentorship, business development guidance, networking, and financing opportunities, USP graduates and alums with promising entrepreneurial ideas could gain the support and exposure needed to pitch their ventures and take the next step toward building businesses that contribute to employment and economic development in Southern Punjab.
