The capital city of Pakistan, Islamabad, will soon have 146 electric buses to save this city from environmental pollution and conserving energy. This project will also promote sustainable urban mobility and redefine public transportation in Pakistan's capital, setting a benchmark for other regional cities.

At a recent conference held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters, Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa discussed balancing financial prudence with service excellence. This philosophy underpins the phased launch of electric buses across all thirteen routes, totaling 160 vehicles, as well as the inauguration of the Zero Point charging station. Beyond these immediate milestones, the CDA is mandating a complete transition of its fleet and that of commercial operators to electric vehicles, marking a bold stride toward sustainability.

According to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Vice Chancellor of the National Skills University Islamabad (NSU), this initiative needs better driver training and infrastructure development. Moreover, these buses will need to be maintained in the future. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technologies at the National Skills University Islamabad could contribute significantly to this project. Soon, a delegation from the National Skills University Islamabad will meet with the CDA Chairman to apprise him about the availability of resources. Worth mentioning here is that the NSU is already working on an electric bike/car project, and the mechanical engineering technology graduates will be completing their internship in China through fully funded scholarships.

Beyond the immediate benefits of cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions, the electric bus initiative reflects a broader vision of urban planning that aligns with global environmental goals. As Islamabad takes this monumental step forward, it not only sets an example for cities across Pakistan but also inspires the world, demonstrating that sustainable innovation is not just desirable, but also achievable.

The road ahead is long, but with 146 electric buses ready to roll and a city eager for change, Islamabad has laid the groundwork for a greener, brighter future. This is not just a beginning, but a firm commitment to a transformation that prioritizes people and the planet.
